Date and meaning of Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s day is celebrated on February 14th in many countries all over the world. It’s the celebration of love. Not only the romantic love, but also the love for friends and family.

The origin of Valentine’s Day

This celebration started more than two thousand years ago, on February 15th, as a winter festival in Britain. On that day, people asked their gods to give them a good harvest and strong animals.

The story

When the Romans came to Britain, they brought the story of Saint Valentine. They told that there was a Christian man called Valentine who lived in Rome. At that time, the emperor of Rome was Claudius the Second, who wasn’t a Christian. He didn’t want his soldiers to be married, because he believed that they wouldn’t concentrate on the battles. So, he forbid all his soldiers to marry.

Valentine worked for the church and one day helped a soldier who wanted to marry. Claudius, the emperor, said he had to die and sent him to prison. He died on February 14th.

The story of Saint Valentine became so popular in Britain that they changed the date of the winter festival from February 15th to 14th and its name became Saint Valentine’s Day.

In the early nineteenth century people started to give Valentine cards to the ones they loved and also presents as flowers or candy.

Valentine’s Day today

Nowadays, restaurants, cafeterias and shops get ready for Valentine’s Day by using theme related decorations as hearts, flowers or birds. It’s a good way to improve sales after Christmas. People still exchange gifts and cards with romantic messages and it’s a popular wedding date.

Valentine’s Messages

Love can be expressed in many ways. One way I know is to send it across the distance to the person who is reading this. ( O amor pode ser mostrado de várias maneiras. Uma que eu conheço é mandá-lo através da distância para a pessoa que está lendo isso.)

Everybody hears what you speak. Friends listen to what you say. Best friends pay attention to what you don´t say.Todos ouvem o que você diz. Amigos escutam o que você fala. Melhores amigos prestam atenção ao que você não diz.

A friend is someone who knows the song of your heart and can sing it when you have forgotten the words.Um amigo é alguém que conhece a música do seu coração e pode cantá-la quando você tiver esquecido a letra.

Friends are the way God found to take care of us. Amigos são a forma de Deus cuidar de nós.

Indefinite Articles

Em inglês, o artigo indefinido ( um, uma) pode ter as seguintes formas: a ou an.

As duas formas são usadas com substantivos contáveis no singular, para generalizar.

Para utilizar o a e o an, temos algumas regras e exceções:

O A é utilizado antes de palavras que começam com som de consoante.

Exemplos: a banana, a dog, a plant, a hat (H com som de R)

O AN é utilizado antes de palavras que começam com som de vogal.

Exemplos: an apple, an orange, an elephant

Nos casos anteriores foi fácil decidir qual usar porque a letra inicial da palavra correspondia a regra, mas existem exceções.

Usamos:

AN antes de H mudo:

na hour, an honor

A antes de U e EU quando o som é parecido com YOU:

a European, a university, a unit.

Exemplos: A University. O som inicial da palavra é “you” e não “u”.

An Honor – Apesar da palavra ser iniciada por uma consoante, o som do h não é pronunciado

Não usamos a/an antes de palavras no plural:

~~A girls An oranges~~

Não usamos a/an antes de palavras incontáveis:

The Definite Article – The

O Artigo Definido The é usado antes de um substantivo já conhecido pelo ouvinte ou leitor. Significa O, A, OS, AS, mas, em Inglês, é invariável em gênero e número, ao contrário do que acontece no Português. Exemplos:

The boy in black is my friend.

The girls who are laughing are happy.

Summing up:

A e an são usados quando nos referimos a um ser qualquer.

Ex.: I saw a crazy boy at the party.

O garoto da frase poderia ser qualquer um ( indefinido)

THE é usado quando sabemos a quem nos referimos( definido)

The boy is my friend’s cousin.
